5 Easy Steps for College Students to Begin the Job Search Process

Starting the job search might seem like a very big task. The best way to start is first to just to turn them into small tasks. The job search might take you in a few different directions, and that is totally fine. Just want to show you that there are some easy steps for beginning the process.

1) Talk to friends, families, and acquaintances that you are looking for a job. Some friends might have some suggestions or even better yet a few contacts. There might be a position that your friend had and they can put in a good word for you. These types of jobs are more word-of-mouth and so staying on top of their radar is important. Most important is not to be afraid to ask. There is no fear in asking or mentioning that you are looking for a job

2) Attend campus career events. Every Fall and Spring there are on-campus recruiting events where different employers come to campus. Go take a look! You get a chance to get a good idea of what types of positions are being offered and you get to pick up some cool swag! There are also information nights held on campus. These are smaller venues and allow for more Q&A’s.

3) Are you part of a campus group? Each group on campus has a focus on a particular industry. You might be a finance group, engineering group or even a more social group like a fraternity or sorority. These are excellent ways to find a job because some employers reach out or even sponsor the organization. They are looking for potential employees like you!

4) Read the local news. Many newspapers and blogs post about companies that are hiring or expanding to some new projects. This is a great way to learn about some areas that have the potential for new hiring. Take a look at some of the local newspapers, blogs or trade journals.

5) Apply for an internship. You would be surprised how often looking for an internship (paid or unpaid) can work towards a full-time job. They get a chance to know you and you get a chance to know the company. This is a great way to gain some experience. Check it out!
